National Mai Tai Day is celebrated on August 30th each year to honor the iconic tropical cocktail created by Trader Vic in 1944. The drink was originally made for friends at Trader Vic’s Oakland restaurant and includes 17-year-old Jamaican rum, fresh lime, orange curaçao, rock candy syrup, and French orgeat. One guest exclaimed, “Mai Tai-Roa Aé,” which translates to “out of this world—the best” in Tahitian. In 2009, Oakland, California officially named August 30th as Mai Tai Day.
We like to add a little pineapple juice for added sweetness, making it a Royal Hawaiian! Enjoy!
